The scope of this policy covers all activities associated with our gardening and grounds maintenance services, including planting, pruning, hedge trimming, lawn care, tree work, waste handling and the operation of ride-on and pedestrian powered machinery. We will ensure that safe systems of work are in place for every task and that appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is available and worn where required. This policy applies to full-time and part-time staff, temporary workers, sub-contractors and volunteers engaged in delivering Barkingside gardening and maintenance services on behalf of the company.

Every job will be subject to a documented risk assessment prior to work starting. Risk assessments will identify hazards such as moving vehicles, power equipment, manual handling, hazardous substances (including pesticides and fuels), working at height and environmental risks. Control measures will be implemented according to the hierarchy of controls: elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative measures and PPE. Key responsibilities include:

Implementation & Safe Working Practices

We promote a safety culture that encourages open communication. Staff are expected to report unsafe conditions, suggest improvements and participate in safety meetings. Mental health and welfare are considered through reasonable workloads, rest breaks and access to support resources. The company will provide information and training so workers can recognise signs of fatigue or stress and know how to seek help.

This Health & Safety Policy is reviewed at least annually and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, equipment or legal requirements. Audits and performance reviews measure compliance with safe working practices and identify opportunities to enhance risk controls.
